SOPHIE O'SULLIVAN continues to follow her legendary mother Sonia's footsteps as she progresses in her athletics career. Sunday saw the 22-year-old take gold in the 1500m at the National Athletics Championships in Santry's Morton Stadium. Despite her age, it's just the latest in an already lengthy list of accomplishments on the track.
At the intensely elite collegiate grad in the United States she has earned All-Pac 12 First-Team honours in cross country. She's also helped her team set an NCAA record in the Distance Medley Relay. At the international grade she's won gold for Ireland at the European Under-23 Championships at 1500m.
She'd previously taken a silver at 800m in the 2018 U18s too. As well as attending college in the US, she has lived there for a sizeable chunk of her life. That's where Sonia and her Australian husband Nic Bideau primarily made their base after initially starting a family in his hometown of Melbourne.
While speaking to RSVP in 2023, Sonia said of her slightly nomadic existence: "I kind of say I don't really know where I live. "I spread my time across different time zones. But I've always spent some part of the year in Ireland.
"I also spend some time in America at the moment as I coach over there for a few months of the year."
