One mum has revealed how she went from 'the fat friend' to a beauty queen after losing 11-stone. Effy Murphy achieved the staggering weight loss after she underwent gastric sleeve surgery three years ago. Her journey has taken her from being too overweight to be granted a visa to New Zealand to finishing as the runner-up in a top Las Vegas beauty pageant.
Speaking openly about her weight issues, the 37-year-old admitted her food addiction was once "ridiculous" and that she would constantly eat high-fat meals which she washed down with sugar-loaded beverages. "I could sit down and have two takeouts each day, with a bunch of garbage in between, and maybe four litres of soda per day," she said. "I had severe obesity.
" Effy's weight issues even caused her issues when she tried to travel to New Zealand with her children and then-husband. The country's government refused her visa application, citing her weight as a "health risk". With just three months to reapply, Effy turned to the "Shake diet" and lost three stone, allowing her to enter the country.
However, things didn't go as planned, and Effy's marriage soon ended. Depressed, she gained back the weight she'd lost and then some, leading her to explore a more drastic option. In June 2019, Effy, who now lives in Youghal in County Cork, Ireland, underwent gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey, which involved removing 90% of her stomach and appetite gland to curb her hunger – and cost £2550.
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as slee.
