Jordan Manning (30), from Clarehall, swapped fighting fires for the hot sand at Marathon des Sables, a seven-day ultra-marathon which covers the distance of six regular marathons. This multi-day race is held every year in the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco, and Mr Manning did the challenge in aid of Temple Street Hospital.

“I hadn’t really heard of it before, but I read a story about one of the guys in work who did it 10 years ago in our internal magazine called Fire Call,” Mr Manning said. “It sounded right up my street. It was exactly the type of thing I’ve been looking for, so I jumped on the bandwagon.
