CROWN POINT — Over 730 graduates and their families packed inside Crown Point High School's Bulldog Stadium to take part in the school's 142nd commencement ceremony on Wednesday evening. Two student speakers were selected to address their fellow class of 2024 classmate. The students selected were part of the group who had earned the distinction of summa cum laude by achieving a grade point average of 4.
35 and above. Ahmad Odetallah referred to a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson in noting all the opportunities he had pursued resulted in more success for him. "In the end, we didn't achieve success by waiting for it to chase us, we always have to be the ones that take a step forward," he told his classmates.
Jocelyn Mollet reflected back to a statement made by her seventh grade speech teacher that had stuck with her, about change always occurring and no way of stopping it from happening. "At the end of my high school career, I though I would just be ready to leave," Mollet said, "But as I look at it now and as we all look around, we can recognized that there's a beauty in having something so worth loving and so difficult to say goodbye to." Erin Rawls, a math teacher at the high school, encouraged the graduates to not limit themselves since they had the opportunity to do unimaginable things.
"Please don't sell yourself short, be proud of what you're doing next, none of you are 'just' doing something, you're all doing something important and something that matters," she sai.
