A 60-year-old man has pleaded guilty to murdering his wife in Eastwood. Dressed in a prison-issue grey tracksuit, Michael McDaid admitted responsibility for taking the life of 53-year-old Rachel McDaid, when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for the short hearing on Friday, July 5. A trial date of September 23 had already been set at a previous hearing at the same court.

But that date will now be vacated. A number of family members packed into the public gallery inside courtroom three to hear the plea entered. Two women were in tears when McDaid admitted his guilt.

Clive Stockwell KC, his barrister, said: "This was a plea he was keen to enter as soon as he possibly could. A psychiatric report has been prepared but, quite frankly, there is nothing in it that will assist the court." Remanding him into custody and setting a sentencing date to the afternoon of Friday, July 12, Judge Stuart Rafferty KC told him: “You have pleaded guilty to murder and the sentence for murder is fixed as life imprisonment.

However, the court has to decide how long it will be before you are eligible to apply for parole. Clearly, it will be many years." Mum-of-three Mrs McDaid was found dead at her home in Nottingham Road, Eastwood , on the morning of Friday, April 19.

Following the discovery, her husband was arrested and charged with her murder. Get the latest news straight to your phone by joining us on WhatsApp On Sunday, April 21, police subsequently charged McDaid, formerly of Nottingham Ro.
