Lanarkshire residents have been left heartbroken after a bench near a beauty spot was engulfed by fire yesterday (May 30). A local dog walker came across the blaze near the Great Falls of the Calder in the evening and posted images of the inferno online. One of the pictures appear to the outline of the bench as it is torn apart by the bright orange flames.

Another image taken from further away shows thick black smoke billowing into the sky. It is believed that the same bench has previously been thrown into the river and was fixed to the floor to ensure it wouldn't happen again. One upset local wrote: "So upsetting! I often use this bench for outdoor learning with my primary class.

" Another added: "Shocking, hate seeing this, disgusted." Fire crews are believed to have been on the scene to extinguish the blaze. The Scottish Fire and Rescue service and Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
