Keir Starmer will earn an incredible six-figure sum as the newly elected UK Prime Minister - and technically he'll now draw two salaries for the top job in politics. The Labour leader is set to be installed in Downing Street today, after crushed Rishi Sunak apologised to the nation as he resigned as PM. As the Conservative party leader, he oversaw their worst defeat in history.
And now Mr Starmer has an overflowing inbox as his attention turns from the gruelling six-week election campaign to the real and pressing problems facing the country. For all the stress of the role of PM, the job is well remunerated - and there are plenty of extra perks for the new No.10 resident, too.
The prime minister continues to receive their MP salary, as well as a wage for being leader of the country. As PM, Mr Starmer will be entitled to a salary of up to £80,807. However, some incumbents have chosen not to claim the full amount — in 2020/21, Boris Johnson claimed £75,440 , and Mr Sunak claimed £75,440 from the available £80,807 in 2022/23.
That five-figure salary comes on top of what Mr Starmer earns as MP for the north London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras. As of April 2024, MPs are entitled to earn £91,346 annually. That means Mr Sunak’s combined salary, should he claim the two full amounts, will be £172,153 as PM.
While leader of the country, Keir Starmer will be entitled to live in a Downing Street flat, rent free. He and his family - wife Victoria Starmer and their teena.
