It was intended building four new homes could have aided the redevelopment of the derelict Abbey Hotel that has sat unused on the opposite side of the main road from Tintern Abbey for more than a decade. Separate plans to demolish much of the hotel's structures and build a new hotel in its place are currently being considered by Monmouthshire County Council. The hotel building is currently described as unsafe, due to its collapsed roof, and as a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

Previously known as the Beaufort Arms it dates from the 19th, and in some parts, 18th century but isn't listed. It is however in the Tintern Conservation Area and the village is part of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, now known as a national..
