Its name alone conjures up a dreamy, sun-dreanched Italian getaway - Sambuca di Sicilia. And now anyone who has had enough of the dreary British weather and plain cuisine can sell up and move to the idyllic village - for just €3. Authorities in the hilly region of Sicily have launched a scheme to sell off abandoned houses for the equivalent of just £2.

The homes, in the old Saracen district of the village, range from small one-bedroomed properties to larger three-bedroom options, all of which require significant restoration to make them habitable again. There is a catch though - renovation costs are likely to be anywhere from £25,000 to £174,000 per property, and must be completed within three years of the purchase date.



It is also unlikely that the prices will remain at €3 on the day of the auction, with previous properties reaching between €5,000 and €10,000. New mayor Giuseppe Cacioppo said: 'The timing is perfect. Tourists and interested buyers currently traveling to Italy, and those planning a trip in spring and summer can come take a look.

Foreigners are flocking to buy our homes, it's been a hit so far.' Visit Sicily describes the Sambuca di Sicilia as “one of Italy’s most beautiful villages”. It describes the region as “an immense basin of vineyards, Lake Arancio, Monte Genuardo and, in the middle, the village with its few thousand inhabitants.
