Preservation Forsyth is calling on Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to call off plans to demolish a row of houses on Lockland Avenue that the hospital says have become hangouts for criminal activity. At a time when affordable housing is on the minds of many in Winston-Salem, advocates for preserving the houses say that Atrium could boost the local housing stock and bring in residents who would keep an eye on the neighborhood by selling the houses for rehabilitation. “The hospital let the Ardmore Neighborhood Association know about a month ago that they were going to tear down 10 houses” of the 11 that Atrium owns on the block, said George Edwards, who is with Preservation Forsyth but also sits on the board of the Ardmore neighborhood group.

“They’ve got no plans for the future and will just leave it as green grass.” Preservation Forsyth recently hosted a walking tour along the houses on Lockland Avenue, hoping to drum up support for their efforts. People are also reading.
