Ground was broken Tuesday morning for a new public charter school named after a legendary Orangeburg football coach. Government, education and business officials joined other community members at the site of the Willie Jeffries School of Excellence at 3029 Five Chop Road. It is scheduled to open for the 2024-25 school year.

The Willie Jeffries School of Excellence will be a tuition-free public charter school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. It's mascot is the eagle. South Carolina State University Head Coach Emeritus Willie Jeffries has partnered with the Berkeley Charter Education Association (BCEA) to bring the new public education option to Orangeburg.



The school will begin serving K-6th grade students this fall and add a grade level each year until it reaches grades K-8 at full matriculation. "The Berkeley Charter Education Association is committed to bringing school choice options to all areas of South Carolina.
