From fishing tournaments, kids’ activities, carnival rides, and live music to fireworks, catfish wrastlin’ and a greased pole competition, this year’s Green River Catfish Festival in Butler County will have something for everyone. The festival, now in its 42nd year, kicked off on June 22 with beauty pageants, a road race and a five mile run/walk. Several events are also scheduled this weekend, including a Tackle the Green Fishing tournament, a Fisherman’s Dinner and daily fish drawings and awards.

The family-friendly festival will continue Thursday through Sunday, with most of the events taking place at the Butler County Fairgrounds, unless otherwise noted. Cole Tynes, vice president of the Morgantown-Butler County Chamber of Commerce, said the event has been a staple for residents, who will often plan their Fourth of July holiday around the festival. “People love the nostalgia and love to have an event to go to on the Fourth of July,” he said.



While many of the attractions have been around for years, one new feature this year is a Kids Zone, featuring face painting, a petting zoo, an Elsa and Anna meet and greet and Fishing for the Little Ones, organized by County Attorney Michelle Duvall. “She (Duvall) did a really good job of putting it together,” Tynes said. “It’s a great option for kids who are too young for the carnival rides and it’s truly centered around kids.
