Grads donning their finest tuxes and gowns have always made their way to Polson Park to take elegant photos amid the beautiful gardens and trees. But that tradition has been blocked for the class of 2024. The City of Vernon has erected blue fencing, cutting off access to much of the park, for creek stabilization work.
"Everybody is up in arms, parents are going crazy," one parent told The Morning Star. "This is a tradition that's been happening for decades and decades and decades." While the photos in the park are not a school sanctioned event, it's something the students organize themselves.
And they've done so for decades. The fences were put up earlier this week to the surprise of many. One parent even went down to ask the city workers about it and was met with what she called "a rude and ignorant response.
" "It's not like the city didn't know this (grad) was happening. It happens every year," said the mom. Instead, grads have scrambled to find alternative locations for their weekend formal photos.
For example, Clarence Fulton students are going to O'Keefe Ranch and Vernon Secondary is heading to Sovereign Lake Park in Coldstream. The City of Vernon failed to respond to queries by The Morning Star..
