A motorist gearing up for a hefty drive was left baffled when threw up a detour that would've added an extra four hours onto his journey. The driver's trek from Nevada to California, which should have been an eight hour and 50 minute cruise along Interstate 80 through the High Desert and Reno, took a wild turn when Google Maps dished out a bonkers alternative. The route would have sent user @the_thin_air on a wild goose chase towards Kennewick, Washington, before looping back down via Bend and skirting past Mount Shasta.
He wrote: "Thinking about adding 4 hours and 200 miles to my trip tomorrow cause I hate turning." Accompanying the tweet was a screenshot showing Google Maps' "fewer turns" option that tacked on those extra four hours. Despite the extended time on the road, social media users encouraged him to embrace the 12 hour and 37 minute adventure for its "breath-taking" views.
One commenter wrote: "Real talk that drive up through bend and through to mt. hood and the dalles is one of the most breath-taking I've ever done. especially in the warm springs reservation, just absolutely desolate and beautiful.
[sic]" Some drivers admitted they'd opt for the scenic route due to their motors being a bit worse for wear. "I would definitely choose that because my car can't turn," one replied. The irony of a road dubbed "fewer turns" passing through a place named "Bend" wasn't lost either, with one writing: "Not sure if they can still call it Bend after you take that route.
" Anoth.
