Katrena Ward Caston, executive sous chef at Horsch Radish, is in the running for the 2024 Favorite Chef Competition.



“I discovered my love of cooking around the age of 17,” she told The News-Gazette. “I had a rough start as a young lady, but a very sweet man named John Ninneman (who owns the Downtown Cafe in Decatur) saw something in me and offered me a job as a cook. “It’s been magic ever since.

” Caston has been a professional cook for 23 years and joined Horsch Radish in August 2023. To cast votes for Caston, go to favchef.com/2024/katrena-ward .

It’s free to place a single vote every day. A $1 donation to the James Beard Foundation allows individuals to cast an additional vote. According to organizers, the nonprofit provides “critical resources and initiatives” for the nation’s food and beverage professionals.

The current round of voting, which reduces each division to 15 competitors, ends Thursday night. “My inspiration to enter the contest was truly just to see if I could even be chosen,” Caston said. “.
