When Rob Hochschild started volunteering at Santa Fe Community College's KSFR radio station in the fall, he wasn't angling for a full-time position. But that's what ended up happening to the East Coast native and self-described podcast and radio junkie, who just finished his third week as the station's news reporter. "It's a very fortunate opportunity because I wanted to learn a lot about New Mexico, and now I'm getting paid to do that," he said in a Friday interview.
Hochschild is succeeding Kevin Meerschaert as the station's only full-time reporter. The position was vacant for a number of months following Meerschaert's departure. He left Santa Fe in January to take a position as a news reporter and anchor at WEMU, the National Public Radio affiliate in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Hochschild's career in radio started in college at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where got involved with the college newspaper and radio station. After working for several years in public relations, he decided to pursue a career in radio, first in Cape Cod and then rural Pennsylvania, where he described the news as "a lot of farms and fires." He then spent some time as a newspaper reporter at the same paper he delivered as a boy, the Norristown Times Herald .
After moving back to Massachusetts he took a job in public relations at Berklee College of Music, where he eventually became director of communications before transitioning to teaching as an assistant professor of liberal arts. He continued hi.
