- Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev held talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the State Residence in Cholpon-Ata on July 2. They discussed bilateral cooperation issues, exchanged views on international issues. Foreign Minister Kulubaev welcomed the UN Secretary-General, positively regarded activities of UN agencies in Kyrgyzstan, touched upon climate change in the context of advancement of mountain agenda.
FM Kulubaev said 2022 was declared the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development. In the same year, a resolution of the UN General Assembly was adopted, within the framework of which 2023-2027 were proclaimed the Five Years of Action for Development of Mountain Regions. With support of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at FAO, a Global Action Plan has been developed, and work is underway to create the Trust Fund, Foreign Minister Kulubaev said.
Discussing the issue of regional and international security, including Afghanistan, the Kyrgyz side provided detailed information on the priorities of Kyrgyzstan as a candidate for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for 2027-2028. Antonio Guterres highly appreciated the UN’s interaction with Kyrgyzstan, and also expressed gratitude to the Kyrgyz side for actively promoting the mountain agenda at the global level. Having such a beautiful nature, Kyrgyzstan sets an example for other states in matters of biodiversity conservation, he said.
