Article content Residents and visitors at select Saugeen Shores beaches can now rent floating wheelchairs for day use through the town’s website, or by using a QR code at rental locations. are a floating three-wheel beach buggy chair. The floatable armrests and wheels of the wheelchair are designed to easily transport adults and children from the beach to the water safely.

The WaterWheels floating wheelchairs will be available until Labour Day at the beaches in Port Elgin and Southampton with two booking periods per day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.



m. and 1 p.m.

to 5 p.m. Individuals can book the wheelchair for two consecutive periods when available.

In Port Elgin, the wheelchair is available for pickup at the harbour office. In Southampton, the wheelchair is located at 1 Beach Road (long dock parking area) for self-service pick-up. Accessible beach mats (Mobi-Mat) are also available at each location to assist with mobility to the water.

“Saugeen Shores is continually looking to provide equal access to its amenities and facilities for residents and visitors, regardless of age or ability,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau in a media release. “These floating wheelchairs, alongside our mobility mats, help ensure that everyone has the chance to enjoy our beautiful Lake Huron waters.” Renters must ensure those who can’t swim are using a lifejacket and water conditions are suitable for the use of the floating wheelchair.

Renters are also responsible for ensuring the wheelchair remain.
