Fishing is going to get better in Lorain for anglers. The U.S.

Environmental Protection Agency awarded the city of Lorain a $1.6 million grant to improve two public fishing and park areas in the city, according to Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley. “We got the good news today,” said Bradley of the official notification.



The two areas to be renovated include Sunset Pier Park and Hot Waters Boat Launch and fishing area, he said. Both are a part of the city’s long term ongoing plan to redevelop its waterfront, Bradley said. The Sunset Pier Park project includes redevelopment of a prominent area on the lakefront known as the “Finger Piers,” according to the city’s website .

Park amenities expected to be built include a community amphitheater, trails and fishing areas within a natural setting on the piers. As the planning process begins, a primary focus is improving public access at Sunset Pier Park, to not only the Black River, but also Lake Erie, Bradley said. One specific use of the grant will be to plan, design and construct a new boat ramp at the public boat ramp at Hot Waters.

The Hot Waters Boat Launch access, the only free public boat launch in the area, is heavily used by the boating public. City officials recognized the need for improvement at the boat launch, which is why the grant was sought after, Bradley said. The launch provides “recreational opportunities in a disadvantaged community and will replace the concrete launch ramp, the deteriorated floating docks, .
