“Perspectives," the final exhibition of Larson Gallery’s 2023-2024 season calendar, features the combined talents of two exceptional Yakima artists, fabric artist Deborah Ann and painter Susan Hahn. After a long career in law, 30 years as a Yakima County Judge, Hahn has changed hats to pursue her passion for creating art. Although she has painted off and on for 50 years, retirement has given her time to settle down into life as a full-time artist.

Hahn works in oil, acrylics and alcohol inks on canvas, creating brilliantly colored interpretations of nature. Her work focuses on her fascination with the interplay between color and light in a medium with a mind of its own. Her paintings illustrate the relationship between the translation of a subject and the randomness of the magic in the media.

"As an artist I prefer to render subject matter in a way that emphasizes the unexpected magic from loose and relaxed techniques rather than over-thinking and over-manipulating the subject and the medium," Hahn said. "In doing so I prefer the use of bright color rather than more subtle subdued hues. My work is distinctive in that regard.

I have found there are many accomplished artists in Yakima County. It has been my pleasure to get to know them and experience their incredible creativity. I am hopeful some of that talent has rubbed off on me.

” Deborah Ann works in fabric appliqué adding oil stick and oil pastel along with thread work to enhance her view of nature, people, and arc.
