Rishi Sunak has addressed the nation outside Number 10 today to say 'sorry' following a brutal Conservative wipeout in the 2024 General Election. The Prime Minister will now travel to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the King. After walking out of Number 10 with his wife, Mr Sunak opened by apologising firstly.

He then said he would step down as party leader in due course. Mr Sunak went on to highlight some wins from his time in government, adding that 'this country is safer, stronger and more secure than it was 20 months ago'. He went on to wish Keir Starmer well as prime minister, before thanking his family for their support.

I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss. "To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who work tirelessly, but without success, I'm sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved. It pains me to think how many good colleagues that contributed so much to their communities and out country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons.

"I thank them for their hard work and their service. Following this result, I will step down as party leader – not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor.
