The Director General of National Gallery of Art, Ahmed Sodangi, has emphasised the significance of the visual art sector to the socio-economic development of Nigeria. He noted that visual art is a vitally important economic industry, generating revenue, creating jobs and developing communities, adding that “several resources available to us offer substantial research findings on Visual Art and economic development, from statewide economic impact to even grassroot level. Visual Art is the sum of all the parts of the creative industries including trade, labour and production.
Today, through Visual Art, the creative industries are among the most dynamic sectors in the Nigeria’s economy, providing new opportunities for both the young and old.” He, therefore, urged parents to encourage their children to love art. Sodangi made the call in his address at this year’s edition of the Children in Art Talent Hunt Exhibition, which was on the theme: “Visual Art As A Panacea For The Growth Of The Economy”, and held at the Aina Onabolu Studio, National Gallery of Art, National Theatre complex, Iganmu Lagos.
The talent hunt exhibition is an annual event organised by the National Gallery of Art. Designed to commemorate the World Children’s Day and to celebrate the artistic creativities of the Nigerian children, the program is created for children/ students in nursery, primary and secondary schools. And it is aimed at exposing children to art in its diverse forms.
