As it turns out, those who teach can also do. That became clear when Des Moines County area art educators recently hung some of their own works at the Art Center of Burlington, 301 Jefferson St., after the Burlington High School student art show concluded on May 16.
A crowd filled tables at the Friday night reception for the show, Art Ed-Flow-Sion, at the Art Center’s Gallery Lounge that also recognized art center volunteers. Surrounded by colorful, framed wall art and some ceramic pieces, attendees enjoyed snacks, wine, beer, and sparkling water while vintage cars, some sleek and shiny, drove past the large windows, and music played as part of the Downtown Cruise Night, echoed by piano tunes inside the center. “I would definitely call it a successful opening.
We’re fortunate to have such incredible art educators here in Burlington. For those who attended the BHS art student show over the past two weeks, it’s clear that Burlington students are under the direction of truly stellar art professionals,” said Elizabeth Pappas, executive director of the ACB. Educators with works on display include Burlington High School art teachers Tony Onesto and Debbie Coyle.
Onesto, 2012 Art Educator of the Year, has eight pieces in the show. His works invite viewers into a different realm, for example, the unusual combination of a large black bird crammed inside the wide-open mouth of a human skull that has eyeballs and appears surprised, in his piece, “Eternal Grasp: Raven’s Cov.
