Article content Carter was born and raised in Edmonton. He volunteered with the LSL Braided Journeys program, organizing Indigenous games at Fort Edmonton Park, participating in youth mentorship programs, and tutoring math. In Grade 11, he was selected for the Verna J.
Kirkness Foundation Program and became the first Indigenous student in Canada accepted into the Suncor Refinery Engineering Internship for Indigenous Youth. Excelling academically, Carter received the Principal’s List Award in Grades 10 and 11, along with the academic high average award in Grade 11, and is on track for further achievements in Grade 12. Carter has been accepted into the University of Alberta’s Fall 2024 Engineering Program! Commencement address: “As I stand before you all, I can’t help but feel at home in this beautiful community we have built through years of dedication and hard work.
We have grown into mature young adults, ready to face life head-on. The countless hours inside the school’s walls have paid off for this very night. You all deserve to be here for this chance at a new life ahead of you.
When you go out into the world, you can bring change and leave a positive impact for everyone around you. A phrase that we have been told before even kindergarten was “Treat one another the way you want to be treated” or “Love thy neighbour as thyself.” When you are all on your own adventures in life, remember that phrase, and maybe you can make someone’s day just a bit better.
