I like to think I’m an experienced hobby fisherman; I’ve been fishing since I was a kid. Growing up on Long Island, freshwater fishing isn’t the best, so I spent my time almost exclusively fishing for carp. Since going to college in Syracuse, where I was on the fishing team, and then moving to Ohio, I’ve become a more well-rounded fisherman.

Since moving, I had opportunities to fish different waterbodies like creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds and even urban drainage basins. Challenging myself to fish in different locations, I have become more comfortable using different lures and techniques. However, as a result, I have found lures I like and typically don’t stray away to a fault sometimes.

Last weekend I got a lesson in keeping an open mind to new ideas, even if they stray from conventional thinking. Last weekend, two of my best friends from high school drove up from Long Island to spend the weekend fishing. Somehow their drive took seven hours, and I’m not sure how that happened as my drive has never been longer than five and a half hours.

Neither of them is an avid fisherman, with one of them having never caught a fish. Before their visit, I scouted out several spots so they could get a taste of what central New York has to offer and see some of the natural landscapes. I also prepped the lures we’d use based on previous success, and conventionally what works for spring fishing.

The last thing I wanted to happen was to host a fishing trip where no fish got caught. .
