Anglers are reeling with joy. Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Gov. J.

B. Pritzker of Illinois signed a Project Partnership Agreement Monday with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), greenlighting the Brandon Road Lock and Dam project. It’s being built in Joliet, Illinois.



But the project is important to Michiganders, too, as it represents a plausible solution to stop the spread of invasive carp — those crazy fish that fly — and other aquatic nuisance species from entering the Great Lakes and impacting the ecosystem and Macomb County’s Blue Economy. “Today’s agreement will help us get shovels in the ground as soon as possible on the critical Brandon Road project,” Gov. Whitmer said, in a news release.

“The Great Lakes are the beating heart of Michigan’s economy, and Brandon Road will help us protect local communities and key industries including fishing and boating.” Candice Miller concurred. “I applaud the states of Michigan and Illinois for working with the U.

S. Army Corps of Engineers to reach this agreement,” the Macomb County Public Works Commissioner and current Great Lakes Commission member said in a statement. “There’s no understating how vital this project is to protect the native fish in our beautiful lakes that we cherish.
