Crowds gathered at the Pier Head enjoying beautiful late-afternoon weather as the On the Waterfront festival kicked off. 12,000 people were expected at the festival this evening to watch local comic Paul Smith perform a one-of-a-kind open-air comedy show. Paul shot to fame as a resident comedian at the Hot Water Comedy Club and has gone on to become one of the biggest comics in the UK.

He recently finished a sell-out arena tour, including a show at the M&S Arena. Fans were allowed in early to watch England's draw with Denmark live on the big screen, with deckchairs laid out on the grass for sunbathing. Everyone the ECHO spoke to was excited to see Paul Smith in the flesh, and none of them seemed put off by the prospect of his trademark "roasting" of his audience.



Gemma from Northamptonshire told the ECHO: "I just love how brutal and honest he is. A lot of people wrap things in cotton wool but he says it like it is". She said she started watching his comedy during lockdown and it 'gave her hope'.

She added: "It was such a depressing time, and watching him made me feel better. That's why we're here." Ian Hale from Flint in North Wales said: "The audience participation is part of the attraction.

It's all off the cuff. He's so funny." Ashleigh-Jade Collins from Wrexham said: "He is absolutely hilarious.

I wanted to sit at the front and get called on but my friend wouldn't let me. She made me tone down my outfit so we'd blend in!" The musical part of On the Waterfront will start t.
