Last month, Helen Worth announced that she was leaving the Coronation Street cobbles after 50 years – and Gail Platt ’s exit story has now been revealed. ‘This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding’, Helen said, in a statement which shocked fans of the ITV soap.

‘I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. ‘The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.’ Metro.

co.uk understands that she began filming her final storyline this month, with her last scenes due to air at Christmas . It’s also been reported that Sean Wilson, who portrayed her second husband Martin Platt, is set to return.

The two first got together after the death of her first husband Brian (Christopher Quinten), and later welcomed son David (Jack P. Shepherd) into the world. After a string of affairs they broke up, and Martin was last seen on the show in 2018 when David visited him to escape Weatherfield in the wake of his sexual assault.

What brings him back this time remains to be seen, with many viewers wondering how he will play a part in wrapping up Gail’s five decades on the nation’s favourite street. L.
