A local catering company which works with refugee women is set to close its cafe at Easton Community Centre at the end of this month. Houria Catering CIC will continue hosting events at the community centre but will no longer occupy a permanent cafe on the premises. After the previous cafe, Neck of the Woods, closed several years ago, there was no longer a cafe at the community centre until Houria took over the place in January 2023.

The cafe, which specialises in African food from a range of countries, will close on July 31, 2024. Houria CIC will continue to focus on catering, events, and community feasts instead. Houria describes itself as ‘an anti-slavery, anti-racist organisation working with women, providing free training and a safe working environment.

It said: ”For the last 18 months we have had the honour and the privilege of working alongside our gorgeous partners at Eastside Community Trust in delivering the cafe and it’s been an incredible ride. “Our massive joint effort to upgrade the kitchen and space, enhancing the friendly and caring hub of Easton Community Centre into a tasty and vibrant eatery, has been graciously received by the communities that visit.
