Cathedral Village recently hosted a 100th birthday celebration for Roxborough Grand Dame and community activist, Sylvia Myers. Scores of friends, family, and colleagues from the many phases of her life descended upon the ballroom at the Village to reminisce with her and express their gratitude for the decades of service she has provided throughout her adult life. This would all be well and good, looking at someone’s life in the past tense, acknowledging a person who has meant so much to so many over the years.
However, one cannot truly look at the long life of Sylvia Myers, who was born on June 18, 1924, through a prism to the past, without focusing on the here and now. Myers is still an active and vibrant force within our community and likely to be so for the foreseeable future. For me, that’s the part that’s so remarkable.
Sylvia and Nick Myers made for quite a photogenic pairing in this wedding keepsake. (Myers family photo) Sylvia Myers was quite the "looker" back in her day. (Myers family photo) Sylvia and Nick Myers had their first date at the classy club called Sciolla's in Hunting Park.
(Myers family photo) A clever poster harkened back to the Roaring 20's when Sylvia Myers came on the scene. (Photo by Rick Cawley) She may have slowed down her activities a wee bit of late, but she remains the same inspirational force for positive change and bringing joy into people’s lives that she’s always been. The sheer number of organization’s where she still has a gui.
