A beautiful "chocolate-box" village located around an hour from Liverpool is the "perfect day trip." Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, I took a midweek trip to visit a small village in Lancashire that to me looks like something out of a storybook. Full of idyllic cottages and thriving independent businesses, Croston is steeped in and rural landscape.
Getting the train from to Ormskirk and changing to Croston, the journey was incredibly easy and from the station, it is a ten minute walk to get to the heart of the village. Walking down Station Road, I'm met by beautiful, historic houses, as well as many cyclists and dog-walkers. Nestled in the countryside, is very picturesque and many visit to walk around and take in the scenery of Croston Moss.
Continuing up towards Town Lane, I'm met by a little historic bridge which goes over the River Yarrow, surrounded by stunning cottages, flower baskets and a historic church behind it. Nearby lies a called Thyme on the Yarrow, which serves an array of breakfasts, lunches and sweet treats. Inside, I'm greeted by Suzy Whillis, originally from Philadelphia in the United States, who moved to Croston with her husband Dave at the beginning of the year, later taking over the business.
Priding themselves on supporting and sourcing local food and ingredients, the couple have made the café into a "hub" for the community and offer everything from coffees and toasties to Dave's signature rocky road and lemon drizzle cake. Suzy, .
