She called him her mentor and her manager, but to Céline Dion, René Angélil’s greatest role was that of her husband. Dion was just a child when she met the man who would change her life professionally and personally. Now, more than four decades later and eight years after his death, , “He’s still within me.

Dion was just 12 years old when she met the 38-year-old man who would become both her manager and (much later) her husband — and it was her family that made that meeting possible.



Her mother, Thérèse Dion, and one of her 13 siblings, brother Jacques Dion, co-wrote a song with her, “Ce n’était qu’un rêve.” Then another brother, Michel Dion, got a demo tape into the hands of Angélil, who’d gained fame as a manager and producer. Soon after, the young singer got the chance to audition for him.

“While I was singing he started to cry,” Dion told magazine of their first meeting. “I knew then I had done a good job.” Angélil, who was married to his second wife, Anne Renée, at the time, took on the role of agent, manager and producer to Dion.

To launch her singing career in 1981, reported that he mortgaged his home. Of course, it proved to be a safe gamble, as Dion eventually became a singing sensation. Angélil officially parted ways with Renée in 1985.
