In this season of travel, the women’s vocal ensemble Cecilia will take the audience on a musical journey spanning East Africa, Scotland, France, England, Scandinavia, and several parts of the United States. The Sunday, June 23 concert, “How Can I Keep From Singing?,” at 2 p.m.
in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Ukiah, includes contemporary classical, international folk, and 1940s-’50s pop music. Some songs are beautiful contemporary settings of texts by famous poets, including the 14th century Persian mystic Hafiz, the 11th century German mystic Hildegaard of Bingen, and Scottish poet Robert Burns. Instrumentalists on piano, cello, upright bass, and drums will join the singers for some pieces.
Many Cecilia members, and Conductor Jeff Simpson, have been musical fellow-travelers for decades in Cecilia, Ukiah Valley Madrigal Singers, the Mendocino College choirs, and other local ensembles. They’re thrilled to be joined this year by several new members. Cecilia’s current members are Barbara Aspin, Susan Baird, Giny Chandler, Karen Gowan, Gina Henebury, Joan McDowell, Janet Noe, Joyce Paterson, and Marilyn Simpson.
Instrumentalists for this concert are Jeff Simpson, piano; Liz Oliver, cello; Larry Ames, bass; and Joe Swearingen, percussion. All are welcome at this free concert on Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m.
