Bryson DeChambeau’s performance at the U.S. Open is a reminder of all golf can be at its finest, and also of the few missing pieces that could make it all but perfect.
Though a breakthrough could come soon, the game’s greatest are still divided between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIVGolf, united only for the major championships. “The viewer suffers,” said Frank Nobilo, long-time CBS analyst who will be working on the Travelers Championship telecasts this week. “Bryson was tremendous, and we also saw that in the PGA Championship.
His addition to (Viktor) Hovland and (Xander) Schauffele, I thought it was a great finish. If we are trying to make the game younger, I do agree with some of the LIV players, they’re reaching out doing more stuff on social media. That’s imperative, and that’s been a weakness of a lot of the players under the umbrella of the Tiger Woods era.
” The New Zealand-born Nobilo, 64, won 14 tournaments around the world during his playing days, and had at least one top-10 finish at all four majors. He has been working in TV since 2003, joining CBS’ team in 2015. Tiger Woods in his heyday, Nobilo says, “did a lot of the heavy lifting” in promoting and growing golf’s popularity.
Now, the game needs more of that, which is where DeChambeau, now two-time U.S. Open champ, could help if and when he can get back on The Tour.
“From a TV point of view, Tiger was always the go-to guy because people couldn’t get enough Tiger Woods,” Nobilo .
