KALAMAZOO, MI -- When a new home is built or a business moves in to renovate a property, it’s an opportunity for the city of Kalamazoo to expand its urban tree canopy. Trees create a beautiful, welcoming and walkable public space, said Public Services Director James Baker, by lowering temperatures on sidewalks, parking lots and in buildings. Given the constraints of urban life -- like underground pipes and overhead power lines -- space to plant a tree is at a premium in Kalamazoo.
