Staff at the North Platte Opportunity Center are hopeful, despite a tree falling on their facility Friday during a strong thunderstorm. The North Platte Opportunity Center is a nonprofit organization that provides services and opportunities to adults with developmental disabilities in Lincoln County, and surrounding areas. “We give truly all services for a person with disabilities from the age 21 and up.
And we can give services for the younger, but there are some different rules and regulations,” said Gwen Book, service development specialist. “But it truly is from life skills to work, employment skills, all that home. So, anything that needs help in any area, we are there to help them be as independent as possible.
” The Opportunity Center provides volunteering opportunities for these individuals and jobs where they can engage with the community and learn valuable skills. “We have people that want to work, their desire to work and to give back to their community is just huge,” said Book. “And so, being able to do that, so truly anything that person wants, we are here to ensure and advocate for them, and give them those experiences in life.
” The tree, which fell onto the facility's dining room, also damaged offices and a conference room on the east side of the facility, at 501 N. Bryan Ave. Other parts of the building remained structurally sound and safe to continue daily operations.
