Chief Executive Officer of Bible Society of Nigeria, Pastor Samuel Sanusi, speaks with AJIBADE OMAPE on polygamy in Christianity and the stance of the Bible on the matter Which factors do you believe are contributing to the current economic hardship in Nigeria? The moment we try to say we are wiser than God and can do it our way, we begin to get it wrong. The advanced societies that we are copying, as I’ve been saying in my small corner here, build their laws, and their principles, based on what the scriptures say. Even those who assume themselves as a religious society are not as religious as we are in Nigeria or Africa.

But, the policies, procedures, and systems that their forefathers have laid down are benefiting them, and they are still living by them. It’s difficult for you to be in that religious society and steal, and your theft will be covered. It’s difficult to be in a religious society and break the law and go scot-free.

But in our system, we try to copy whatever is happening there, but we are not copying right. Our challenge is the challenge of favouritism, ethnicism, and religious, and political factors. When something happens, we should learn to follow what the law says and execute the punishment for the law.

Even in my company, we have situations where some people misbehave, and when you try to punish them, some people say, ‘Why don’t you just overlook it?’ And I say, if you overlook this one, be ready to overlook a bigger one. And why is that? It is.
