Pride Month kicks off on Saturday, 1st June, to mark a time of celebrating LGBTQ+ identities and community. But Pride is also a protest and a call for commemoration. Fortunately, there are a myriad of LGBTQ+ documentaries you can watch which range in tone from hard-hitting to more celebratory, and span decades of queer culture.
There’s Channel 4’s Where Have All the Lesbians Gone?, which takes a sensitive and careful look at the politics of being a lesbian in contemporary society, as well as Olly Alexander 's Growing Up Gay, a bravely personal account and vulnerable exploration of the mental health of LGBTQ+ individuals. There is also Netflix's documentary Pray Away, which portrays how previous supporters of conversion therapy came to condemn it and, in most cases, embraced queer identities themselves. Meanwhile, The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson, in which Johnson's friend Victoria Cruz investigates the trans activist's suspicious death in 1992, is essential viewing against the backdrop of rising hate crimes targeting trans women.
