AfroGeode album release When musician and activist Diona Johnson died unexpectedly in 2023, she had just completed recording an ambitious new album with her band, The Gemstones. On Friday, June 28 — the eve of what would have been Johnson's 37th birthday — that album will be released in multiple formats and celebrated with a show at Bent Paddle Brewing. Baharat and Kaylee Matuszak join The Gemstones to mark the release of "a musical love letter from Diona and the Gemstones to the beautiful humans and communities that inspired and supported them" (bentpaddlebrewing.
com). ADVERTISEMENT Superior Porchfest For a lot of the year, there's not much a Northlander can do with a porch except maybe use it as freezer overflow space. In the spirit of making hay while the sun shines, Superior holds a sprawling concert series annually where performers play on porches.
This summer's event is scheduled over six Thursdays, hitting a different neighborhood each time. It all kicks off Thursday, June 27, in the city's North End neighborhood (superiorporchfest.org).
