Wells in Somerset beat St Andrews, where Princess Kate studied, as Which?'s top small city break (Image: Getty) A beautiful city in Somerset has been named as the best small city for a short break. Wells beat Durham and St Andrews, where Princess Kate and Prince William studied, to top the survey of almost 4,000 members of consumer group Which?. Wells received the highest score of anywhere else in the survey, according to Which?.

It scored 86 percent while Durham's score was 78 percent and St Andrews the same. Which? noted that despite having a population of just over 12,000 it’s officially a city thanks to its 850-year-old Cathedral, which is the seat of the Bishops of Bath and Wells. It also hails the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens opposite which are also open to visitors.
