BBC and ITV viewers were distracted by a detail in the background as Rishi Sunak issued his resignation. The former Prime Minister stepped down as Conservative leader as he led the party to a historic defeat in the general election. Mr Sunak addressed the nation outside 10 Downing Street this morning as he issued an apology to the country.

He said: "I will shortly be seeing His Majesty the King to offer my resignation as Prime Minister. To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry. “I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change.
