Squad selection rules for EURO 2024 require that teams submit a list containing a minimum of 23 players, with managers having the option to bring up to 26 players should they choose to do so. National team squads tend to contain three goalkeepers, roughly eight defenders, and a handful of midfield and attacking options. Julian Nagelsmann, it seems, has opted to include one assistant coach in the suite of players representing Germany at the Euros.

Bayern Munich ’s Thomas Müller, a player known for his intelligence and ability to interpret the nuances of the beautiful game, could prove to be highly influential for the Germans while filling a role from the touchline rather than a position in the lineup. Müller didn’t take to the field during Germany’s 2-1 friendly victory over Greece but played a role with his influence nonetheless. According to German sporting outlet Bild, Müller acted as an additional assistant coach to Nagelsmann, discussing ideas and being consulted by his manager throughout the match.
