Wednesday, May 29, 2024 Cyclone Remal’s urgent fury devastates Assam, claiming three lives and injuring 17, plunging the tourism industry into a deep crisis. Torrential rains and fierce winds unleashed by cyclone Remal wreaked havoc in Assam on Tuesday, leading to significant disruptions in the state’s travel and tourism sectors. The adverse weather conditions resulted in the deaths of three people, including a woman, and injuries to 17 others, as confirmed by officials.
The relentless storm not only caused personal tragedy but also dealt a severe blow to the region’s economic activities, particularly affecting travel and hospitality services. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is actively monitoring the situation from his campaign in Odisha, has expressed concerns about the ongoing inclement weather, which is expected to persist. The Chief Minister has instructed Chief Secretary Ravi Kota to thoroughly assess the impact, particularly on the travel and tourism industry.
As part of the response efforts, reports of uprooted trees and structural damage to homes and power infrastructure have emerged from various parts of the state. This damage has severely impacted road and ferry transport services, key components of Assam’s travel infrastructure. In response to the safety risks, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has issued multiple alerts: an orange alert in districts such as Dhubri and Barpeta, and a red alert in areas including Chirang and Goal.
