Experienced and aspiring gardeners alike can let their creativity blossom during the annual Theatre West Garden Walk June 30. The Garden Walk has supported the artistic efforts at Theatre West Summer Repertory for over 30 years, while also providing an opportunity for area residents to get a close up look at some of the most impressive yards and gardens around. “It lets people go to five different backyard gardens and see what they’ve done,” Garden Walk Committee member Vicki Schmitt said.
“Lots of times we get great ideas from that.” event co-chair Mary Barkeloo said seeing beautiful and thriving outdoor spaces with your own eyes is impactful for anyone aspiring to start or improve their own garden. “You can see what grows in the area.
Someone might have a particular plant, and you’ve never thought about planting that one, but all of a sudden you see it and think maybe you should try it in your yard,” Barkeloo said. She also said that the event is a great place to get inspiration for unique yard decor, hanging baskets and how to make the most out of small or unusually shaped outdoor spaces. “A garden can be huge or it can be small,” she said.
Schmitt added that she’s gotten ideas on how to integrate potted plants into her outdoor areas as well. “They don’t always plant in the soil, which isn’t always the greatest. There are also pots, and a lot of vegetable gardens in raised beds,” she said.
