One of the best ways to save money I have found is by not wasting what you already have. This can come in the form of composting kitchen scraps or actually eating the leftovers from supper the other night or washing and reusing the brand name plastic storage bags for snacks over and over again. On that topic, it's one of my goals for this year to make some sustainable household swaps on everyday items in our house with the intention of saving money in the long run, improving the quality of some items for a more long-lasting inventory and reducing our waste of certain one-use products.

My first goal was to cut back on paper products. Now I’m not so crunchy as to make reusable toilet paper, but I’ve now saved paper plates for only the days when we are in survival mode or on vacation. Our dishwasher does a fine job of washing the plates we use daily.

I have tried to cut back on the amount of paper towels we use by having a croft of rags right below the paper towel holder, so I’m more apt to grab a washable cloth rag than waste a paper towel. They’re still a necessity with the grease in the cast iron pans, but we have cut back. Cling wrap is my arch-nemesis but is often so handy for quickly putting away leftovers.

Lately, I have tried reusable beeswax wraps with great success. Another kitchen swap I have been working on is how I store my leftovers or prepped food in the fridge. Plastic containers are great in a pinch, but they don’t tend to last very long without gettin.
