“It’s a really great family event to start off summer,” Assistant Recreation Director Michele Pawlik said. The city’s Tourism, Marketing and Recreation Department often ushers live music back into the park by hosting the first performance of the season before the Amsterdam Waterfront Foundation’s summer concert series gets underway in July. Featuring local talent at the event was a priority for the city, which is taking that notion a step further by handing the mic to residents to perform the first ballads of the evening karaoke style.

“Any time you see somebody doing karaoke, regardless of how they sound, it's always entertaining,” said Rob Spagnola, director of the Tourism, Marketing and Recreation Department. The city hosted karaoke for the first time at this year’s Spring Fling Festival last month. It was a hit among performers and spectators alike, attracting an audience for the duration.



Cast members from the Amsterdam High School spring musical “Disney's Beauty and the Beast” were among the participants belting out their favorite tunes. Pawlik said they were “phenomenal” and eager to see karaoke offered again. “People loved it,” Spagnola said.

“We wanted to build on that and maybe get some new people down to Riverlink Park who haven't been there before.” Afterwards, Tim Barr, Kolbie G and Ryan Carmell will take the stage with an acoustic performance of their lively and sometimes personal country pop tunes.
