Article content The reflecting pool and water fountain at Alberta’s legislature grounds in downtown Edmonton will reopen just in time for Canada Day. Originally built in the 1970s, the pool wasn’t initially intended to be used by people . Renovations were needed after i ssues with mechanical and filtration systems underneath the pool resulted in more than 60,000 litres of water being lost in the years before the closure.

The water at the pool is now treated, but is more shallow at only six inches deep. “Albertans and visitors to the legislature have been waiting a long time for these pools to reopen and I am thrilled that Phase 1 is done for them to enjoy this summer,” Alberta Infrastructure Minister, Pete Guthrie said in a Wednesday news release. “I look forward to continuing the work to keep our legislature grounds accessible, safe and fun for everyone for decades to come.



” The renovation is part of a $20-million overhaul of the water features at the legislature grounds first announced in May of 2022 , with costs shared between the provincial ($12 million) and federal governments ($8 million). Phase 1 of the work, which involved demolition of the pool, plaza decking, wading pool, and water features, began in March 2023. “The pools and fountains at the legislature are a symbol of what it means to have a house of democracy that is open and accessible to everyone we serve,” said Speaker Nathan Cooper, in the release.
