RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Although many people head to the beach, mountains, or their local pool for the Memorial Day weekend, thousands decided to head to the Raleigh Convention Center for the annual “Animazement” anime convention.
An estimated 13,000 people, wearing brightly colored costumes, and toting along props, filled the center on Saturday. People came from near and far to share their love of Japanese animation and culture. “I’ve been coming here since I was in middle school.
I’ve met so many friends from being here,” said Jordan Mckenzie The three-day event features cosplay, listening to panels, video games, and more. “You have to nerd out and have a good time with your fellow nerds,” laughed Ursual Howard, who traveled from Pittsburgh for the convention. She was one of many new visitors to the city.
“This is my first time here in Raleigh. It’s a beautiful state, very lovely,” said Howard. “Everyone’s been very nice and kind to us.
” This event is one of many events behind the Raleigh Convention Center expansion. On Tuesday, the city council approved the relocation of the Red Hat Amphitheatre to make way for the bigger venue. Officials said in downtown and contribute to the local economy.
